Scientific Service
Observations
The general mission of RMIB's Scientific Division of Observations is to make observations of weather and climate. This division delivers trustworthy meteorological data, data about the composition of the atmosphere and it contributes to the development of new observation methods for public services and scientific research.
This Scientific Service consists of the following services:
Weather instruments
This section is responsible for the good working of the weather instruments of the RMI.
Ozone, UV and aerosols
Service dedicated to the observations of ozone, UV and aerosols in Belgium and abroad (Antarctica).

Dispersion and Atmospheric Composition
Activities:
- Dispersion modelling of multiple trace gases and other species in the atmosphere.
- Participation in the national emergency plan for the management of nuclear and radiological accidents (https://www.nuclearrisk.be/nuclear-emergency-plan), in close collaboration with its partners.
- validation of atmospheric trace gases, retrieved by satellites within the framework of the Atmospheric Composition Satellite Application Facility (AC SAF) (https://acsaf.org)

Remote sensing from Space
The section 'Remote sensing from space' takes care of the reception of satellite images used for the weather forecast
Remote sensing from the Earth
This section is responsible for the observations using teledetection systems such as radars and lightning sensors.
